Research Progress on Laser Rust Removal Technology for Pre-Coating Treatment

In the maritime industry, the safety hazards and economic losses caused by marine corrosion have always been one of the key issues that urgently need to be addressed. In the face of increasingly stringent environmental regulations and the shipping industry's rising standards for the cleanliness of ships and their corroded components, traditional rust removal methods are gradually proving inadequate due to problems such as low efficiency, insufficient precision, potential damage to the substrate, chemical pollution, high resource consumption, and potential health risks. Against this backdrop, laser rust removal technology has quickly become a prominent research focus in the shipbuilding field due to its significant advantages, including non-contact operation, environmental friendliness, high efficiency, low cost, and easy automation control.

In this regard, the article "Research Progress on Laser Rust Removal Technology for Pre-Coating Treatment" was co-authored by professors and scholars from Shanghai Maritime University in collaboration with Shanghai Liangshi InteRobot Technology Corporation, and published in Issue 5, Volume 61 of Progress in Laser and Optoelectronics in March 2024. The article aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the latest research achievements and development trends of laser rust removal technology worldwide, thoroughly analyzing the working principles of typical laser rust removal methods and their performance in practical applications. It also focuses on the impact of process parameters on the laser rust removal effectiveness for marine steel. At the same time, we also pay attention to the integration of laser rust removal technology with other advanced manufacturing technologies, intending to provide scientific evidence and technical guidance for the large-scale promotion of this technology in the shipbuilding field. We hope this article will inspire researchers and engineering professionals alike and jointly promote the further development of laser rust removal technology in the maritime industry.
